Tatuaje

Tattoo

Tattooing is an artistic-social practice that emerged thousands of years ago, with various uses such as permanently committing an individual to a specific community (collective transformation), marking the transition from childhood to adulthood (from young to warrior , from apprentice to shaman, etc.), or as a symbol of maturity after an individual transformation. Currently it is a symbol of the power of the body itself.

The human body, as an organic support subject to changes in time and space, in constant transformation and movement, has been intervened throughout history in multiple ways. However, the fact of permanently marking it with a tattoo is the procedure that has remained with greater acceptance in different cultures, times and regions.

As if the body were really a three-dimensional canvas, the interventions on it are proof of the desire to transgress anatomical uniformity. They function as a way to reveal the uniqueness of each being and, at the same time, as a proof of symbolic belonging to a determined cultural tendency. Is it, perhaps, the purpose of the tattoo to redirect individuation to the historical-social context?

Handpoke, act on society

Nowadays, along with the movements that claim the artisanal and the analogical, the handpoke reappears, as a return to the old ways of marking the body. In this technique, concepts are mixed that configure new forms of tattooing: the idea of scratch or «tumbero» style - performed in prisons, associated with the criminal world and DIY (do it yourself, English expression that means do it yourself) - as well as the indie, 1currents that oppose the parameters imposed by the hegemonic culture through the massive means of production and consumption.

The skin catalogue project, which consists in different experiences within the tattoo and body exploration framework, has driven me to use digital experimentation as a form of registration and manipulation of bodies and tattooed surfaces. Currently I work with photogrammetry as a tool to capture the previously tattooed surfaces with handpoke technique. This new way of register invites me to develop a series of explorations like image juxtaposition or the symbolic language that it all represents. This vast universe can be described as a form of "expanded tattoo", meaning that the limits of what we consider as an engraving tattoo technique, expands to the rich new ways that digital technology brings The meaning projection through these new layers of register opens thousands of new possibilities and roads to take. Here is where the crowdfunding platforms existence benefits the art projects and the artists.

There is an archaic idea in the art of marking our skin with a tattoo, that has also had an exponential growth with the capitalist individualism and the drive of each person altogether the tattoo is for each person, yes, but it also makes this tattooed person part of a community that accepts itself as it is and virtually creates a real cultural network.

My idea of Expanded Tattoo seeks to make this network visible, with the purpose of showing this connection that exists between human beings.
